On 26th December 2003, an earthquake of 6.5 on the Richter Scale hit the city of Bam in Iran, killing 27,000 people, injuring 30,000 and leaving health services devastated.
Handicap International began working to set up support structures for people injured in the disaster, to meet the great need for post-trauma care and functional rehabilitation. After one year of support, Handicap International withdrew from Iran after care management for these individuals was successfully handed back to the Iranian authorities.
