South Sudan gained independence from Sudan on 9 July 2011 as the outcome of a 2005 peace deal that ended Africa's longest-running civil war.

Handicap International initially intervened in southern Sudan in 2006 as part of an emergency response operation to provide support to refugees and displaced people.

Conditions remain unstable in the country, which continues to be affected by border tensions and conflict between rival factions. Despite a tense and evolving situation, Handicap International is continuing to support people with disabilities in the country. There are major needs to be met and our technical team is braving these harsh conditions to rise to the challenge.
