People with disabilities in Niger face a much higher level of discrimination and socio-economic inequality than the rest of the population. This discrimination is expressed through poor access to education, employment, healthcare and the limits placed on their role in society.

In 2008, following initial short term projects, Handicap International's operations in Niger were integrated into our Burkina Faso programme as part of a single strategy. In Niger and particularly in Niamey, we act in two key areas:
- Working towards the inclusion of children with disabilities in mainstream schools, in partnership with the Ministry for National Education;
- Promoting the rights of people with disabilities by providing advocacy support to disability associations.

Key Facts - Niger

• Population: 15.9 million
