Libya
Saving lives and preventing disability
Since April 2011, Handicap International teams have been on the ground in Libya taking daily action to raise the awareness of the populations at risk from landmines and unexploded weapons. Our teams are now clearing landmines in Tripoli to protect civilians.
Major demining operations are necessary following the end of the recent conflict. There is also an urgent need to disseminate information and educate local populations to save lives and prevent injuries from these weapons.

A shiny golden metal object caught my attentionMohamed is a 13 year old boy from Benghazi. He has one brother and three sisters. On Monday 21st March 2011, Mohamed was playing football with his friend in front of his apartment block, when he saw a shiny golden metal object next to a nearby tree.
Our projects
 | Risk education We currently have 75 people working on the ground in Libya to implement risk education activities. Our teams are operating in Benghazi, Ajdabiya, and Misrata. They are intervening in residential areas, key facilities (health and education facilities) and areas close to weapons stockpiles. We are also working to reduce the risks from the proliferation of light weapons in the country. |
 | Demining Our teams are on the ground in Tripoli clearing landmines that are posing a serious risk to civilians. |
