In Kenya, where we have worked since 1992, Handicap International provides support to people with disabilities, refugees and people living with HIV and AIDS. Kenya is one of ten African countries most affected by HIV and AIDS with an average of 400 deaths per day caused by the virus. Handicap International also provides assistance to refugees in the Dadaab refugee camp in the northeast of the country.

East Africa refugee crisis
Right now, nearly 11 million people are facing severe famine in East Africa. Our teams are on the ground in Dadaab camp, providing emergency aid to disabled refugees who are arriving at the camp exhausted and starving. We estimate that 7,500 of the recent arrivals are disabled people in need of immediate care, mobility aids, rehabilitation and psychological support.

Key Facts - Kenya

• Population: 40.9 million
• Household Consumption: $1,028 per year

Supporting disabled and vulnerable refugees
Our teams are on the ground in Dadaab camp, providing emergency aid to disabled refugees who are arriving at the camp exhausted and starving. We are also running four vulnerability focal points and six mobile teams to reach isolated people who need support.Visit our emergency page for more details

Rehabilitation logo

Reaching out to refugees with disabilities
This project, targeting refugee populations in Dadaab, carries out rehabilitation (physiotherapy, occupational therapy), training on activities of daily living, referrals for corrective surgeries, provision of prosthetic devices and mobility aids such as wheelchairs, tricycles, seating and walking aids. So far the project has registered over 7,200 persons with disabilities and provided services to 2,500 persons.
Handicap International also engages in mainstreaming disability into all activities of aid agencies in Dadaab and ensuring the effective integration of persons with disabilities into the community.

Disability and HIV/AIDS
This project supports 16 disabled persons organisations to implement HIV/AIDS prevention campaigns and promote access to healthcare among persons with disabilities. A particular focus is on accessible information for persons with disability, reducing social stigma related to disability, and advocacy for inclusion of disability needs in HIV and AIDS policies.

Youth and HIV/AIDS in schools and with refugees
The Youth and HIV/AIDS project in Garissa has successfully established 42 peer educator clubs within primary and secondary schools (including five mobile schools following nomadic communities), where activities are organised by the young people and their teachers around HIV/AIDS prevention.
Hard to reach Somali nomadic communities are also supplied with audio cassettes in their native Somali dialect. Groups known to be at risk are targeted with “moonlight voluntary counselling and testing” throughout the night. Personnel in health facilities are provided with regular training on AIDS management.

Expanded training in HIV & AIDS prevention, care and support
This project offers training for medical care personnel and provides equipment to rural health facilities in Trans Nzoia district. Handicap International establishes links between heath facilities and community-based services caring for people living with HIV/AIDS. So far Handicap International has trained 62 Home Based Care providers; 40 from Trans Nzoia and 22 from West Pokot.
In partnership with Kitale Municipal Council, Handicap International's youth and disability-friendly Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) and Recreation Centre (Chanuka) records around 1,200 clients a month. Through mobile VCT, Chanuka centre reached most remote areas by providing their services in Trans Nzoia district and neighbouring West Pokot district. It also extends its outreach to Kitale Prisons. Handicap International continuously reaches out to the school-going population through peer clubs combined with outreaches within schools through visits, talks, drama, plays and exchange programs.
Handicap International also supports the Kitale AIDS Program to pay school fees, ensure nutrition and psychosocial support for 200 HIV/AIDS orphans and vulnerable children.

The fight against diabetes in the community
This project, in the districts of Trans N'Zoia and western Pokot, aims to reinforce the response provided by the health system at the primary and secondary health care levels, by linking health services with communtiy outlets to improve accessibility and affordability. The project promotes local ownership and seeks to demonstrate how integrated diabetes management (prevention, care, rehabilitation) needs to become a priority at every level.

Inclusion logo

Rehabilitation and inclusion in education
Handicap International supports its partner Nairobi Family Support Services (NFSS) to conduct assessments and administer physiotherapy and occupational therapy for children with disabilities in Kibera. NFSS also organises community volunteers to raise awareness on disability, and identify and refer children with disabilities in the community.
Alongside this, Handicap International and the Joseph Kang'ethe Primary School in Kibera, Nairobi have concentrated on building the capacities of teachers and parents to ensure the effective inclusion of 34 deaf children.

Mine action and international campaigns
Handicap International and the Kenya Coalition Against Landmines (KCAL) have mobilised stakeholders against cluster munitions and landmines. Handicap International provided information and education to 70,000 Sudanese refugees on the risk of landmines and explosive remnants of war prior to their return to South Sudan.
