Handicap International launched its first project in the Ivory Coast in 1996. At the time, we supported physical rehabilitation centres and trained national staff. Such training did not exist in the Ivory Coast, which was in dire need of specialised physiotherapists and technical experts to make prosthesis and orthosis.
Handicap International has always been careful to conduct its actions in collaboration with local partners who would be capable of taking over the projects in the long run and could supply the necessary services for people with disabilities following the departure of our organization.
In 2008, after Abidjan's physical rehabilitation centre was officially handed over to the local partner, the hospital physiotherapy projects of Bouaké, Man and Danané also reached their conclusion. The process of handing over our activities in the hospitals of Bouaké, Man and Danané ended in late February 2009.
