Rehabilitation and the fight against disabling diseases

Handicap International has worked in Burkina Faso since 1990. Our programme originally focused on the area of rehabilitation but, in recent years, has expanded into care-management for patients with lymphatic filariasis, inclusion of children with disabilities into mainstream education, and providing advocacy support to disabled people’s organisations.

Inclusive education in Burkina Faso
Ensuring the education of children with disabilities
In Burkina Faso, Handicap International has supported a number of initiatives designed to ensure the inclusion of children with disabilities within the mainstream educational system. It is important to show that it is possible to include these children in mainstream schools.

A new life for Djortté K
Handicap International runs a filariasis control project in Burkina Faso. This disease, which is caused by a parasitic worm, can be caught via a mosquito bite. The project is currently implementing initiatives that centre on the involvement of people with Filariasis and those close to them.

Professional inclusion
Aims to promote access among deaf and hearing-impaired people to quality professional and technical training, in order to improve their socio-economic inclusion. Activities include developing public and private bodies to offer professional training, improving access to employment and mobilizing public authorities, professional organisations, families and communities to promote the inclusion of deaf and hearing-impaired people. Working to include children with disabilities in mainstream schools through a pilot inclusive education project in an area close to the capital city, and producing training supports for teachers.
