Handicap International has been working in Algeria since 1998. Our activities in Algeria form part of a wider development process. We aim to make structural improvements to the lives of people with disabilities, to foster their inclusion, and to ensure they play a full role in society. Handicap International has more than 50 partnerships with Algerian organisations in the field of social, economic and educational inclusion, mental health and rehabilitation.

Our projects

Inclusive education
Aims to identify and provide the resources and mechanisms required to allow the inclusion of children with disabilities in mainstream schools, and to create links between the specialized education system and the mainstream school system. Managed in partnership with three local organisations: the Association Baraka in Algiers, APIMC in Sétif and AEFPPS in Boumerdès.

Support for orphans
Aims to improve children’s reception and care in two orphanages: Ain Taya and Bechar. The project includes running educational activities, improving the organisation of the different services provided, training staff and upgrading the facilities and buildings, including in terms of accessibility.

Supporting youth organisations
Handicap International manages this Fondation de France programme in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. It aims to support the activities of youth organisations and to promote south-south and north-south collaboration. A particular emphasis is placed on projects relating to exclusion, social inclusion and prevention of disability.

Disability rights and policies
This project aims to strengthen the capacity of disabled people’s organisations in Algeria and Morocco, by developing their advocacy abilities. The project supports organisations to fulfil their role in implementing and monitoring the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and to increase their influence on public policy.

Enhancing the capacity of associations
As part of the Children and Rights project, associations promoting the rights of children with disabilities receive funding and support in drafting and managing their projects and developing their advocacy abilities. In 2008, we supported 11 projects devoted to the education of children with disabilities.
