Trusts and foundations

Handicap International UK relies on the support of charitable trusts and foundations to continue working to support people with disabilities and vulnerable people in 60 countries worldwide.

Because our work encompasses many diverse areas including education, healthcare, rehabilitation, emergencies, and employment, an increasing number of charitable trusts and foundations work with us to meet our mutual objectives. However, we aim to build upon this existing support by attracting more charitable trusts and foundations that share our passion for disability and international development.

For more information on how your charitable trust or foundation can help us to enable disabled and vulnerable people to overcome discrimination and poverty, please email us at supportercare@hi-uk.org or call us on 0870 774 3737.

Why Trusts and Foundations support Handicap International

Our experience

Handicap International is one of the largest aid organisations specialised on disability and development issues. Since 1982, we have used a holistic approach to disability, putting the individual’s needs at the centre of our work. Our work has already benefited several millions of people but we don’t want to stop there as so much more is needed to end the poverty and discrimination disabled and vulnerable people face.

We were also co-recipient of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize for our involvement in the International Campaign to Ban Landmines.

The range of our work

Handicap International works on a wide range of projects, from clearing landmines and cluster munitions to lobbying for the rights of people with disabilities. Our activities can be spit up in six categories: Health, Rehabilitation, Inclusion, Disability rights, Emergencies, and Landmines & Cluster Munitions.

Our geographical scope

Handicap International currently works in over 60 countries worldwide, in the context of emergencies, post-emergencies, conflicts and long-term development.

The sustainability of our projects

All our projects work with local partners to provide a long-term solution. For instance, we train local rehabilitation specialists and local deminers to make sure that people can help themselves. This means that our work will continue to make a positive impact on the lives of local communities long after Handicap International has gone.

How your Trust or Foundation can make a real difference

The following examples illustrate just some of the ways in which a donation of any size will make a significant difference to our work.

£250 could make a school accessible (e.g. lowering blackboards, widening windows, building accessible toilets) so that children with disabilities can access the same education as other children.

£600 could go towards the costs of providing artificial limbs to 20 amputees.

£4,800 could enable 100 teachers to attend advanced disability awareness training.

£12,000 could go towards the training of 100 local orthopaedic technicians, who will be able to help disabled people and amputees in their community

£32,500 could provide 50 ShelterBoxes in post-emergency situations such as during the recent Haiti earthquake. Those emergency packs contained a 10-person tent and equipment for daily used in this type of shelter for several months.
