New Source keylist on Livelihoods and Disability
2nd June 2010, Source
Source, in collaboration with Sightsavers, has produced a new keylist on Livelihoods and Disability.
The term ‘livelihoods’ can be understood as the means of earning a living or accessing a source of income.
People with disabilities in developing countries face a multitude of barriers to securing decent livelihoods. Globally, the International Labour Organization estimates that some 386 million people of working age are disabled, with unemployment among disabled people as high as 80 per cent in many countries. This is primarily due to social discrimination and stigma, a pervasive negative view that people with disabilities are either unable to work, or cannot be accommodated in the workplace.
This keylist aims to raise awareness on the issue of livelihoods for people with disabilities, providing access to key resources to support development practitioners, service providers and people with disabilities. It draws together key documents, tools and resources.
