Updated Source keylists: Disability and emergencies, Disability and sexuality, and Mental health

17th October 2011, Source

Source is our international information support centre designed to strengthen the management, use and impact of information on health and disability.

Three Source keylists have recently been updated, each on a different theme related to disability:

In emergency situations of natural disaster or conflict, people with disabilities are very often excluded or neglected. This is mainly due to the exclusionary policies and practices of governments, service providers and humanitarian actors, attitudinal barriers, and lack of knowledge regarding the specific challenges that people with disabilities face. Additionally, there is a lack of participation by people with disabilities in contingency planning and disaster risk management.

This keylist gathers introductory information, manuals and guides, specific resources for mental health and education in emergency situations, and case studies about people with disabilities in emergency situations.

People with disabilities have the same sexual health needs as other people; however, they often face barriers to information and services. Many of these barriers are due to the ignorance and attitudes of society and individuals, including healthcare providers, and not the disabilities themselves.

This keylist provides information resources on disability and sexuality for use by people with disabilities, family members, policy makers and practitioners, with a specific focus on inclusive access to sexual health services. Some materials are aimed at specific types of impairments.

Mental health problems relate to a broad range of complex personal, social and environmental situations, and although they are extremely common in society, they are often misunderstood and stigmatised. In many countries, especially developing countries, specialised care management is limited either because services do not exist or there is not sufficient provision to support the population.

The information in this keylist highlights introductory resources, manuals, and regional perspectives with a focus on developing countries. It covers mental health in emergencies, child and adolescent mental health, and mental health and HIV and AIDS.
