DD-Day 2007

you are here: About us > Disability > International Day of Disabled Persons > DD-Day

To mark this year’s International Day of Disabled Persons on December 3rd the BOND (British Overseas Non Governmental Organisations for Development) Disability and Development Group (DDG) will hold “DD-Day”, an awareness raising event supported by Handicap International, along with other international development organisations, at The Central Methodist Hall in London.

The event will bring together 50-100 senior management delegates from international development organisations, such as Action on Disability and Development, Leonard Cheshire and World Vision, and focus on the importance of including disabled people in development work. Participants will be invited to discuss issues such as the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Millennium Development Goals.

Handicap International will have a strong presence at the event, presenting information about Source, its unique online resource centre dedicated to improving information on disability and development. It will also be promoting the Africa Campaign on Disability and HIV/AIDS, a project co-founded by Handicap International, which aims to reduce the vulnerability of disabled persons to HIV/AIDS.

DD-Day will also provide development organisations with practical advice on how to encourage meaningful inclusion in all areas of development and attempt to foster a network dedicated to progress in this area. There will also be a disability awareness workshop spearheaded by the Bond DDG Chair Lorraine Wapling.

Keynote speakers will include Malcolm Bruce MP, Jabulani Ncube (Action on Disability and Development) and Charles Badenoch (CEO, World Vision).

Other events celebrating International Day of Disabled Persons include “Beyond Sight”, an exhibition of photographs by blind and visually impaired people compiled by UK charity PhotoVoice opening on December 3rd in London. The exhibition is the culmination of a number of workshops conducted by blind and visually impaired artists in Mexico and London and explores the use of senses other than sight in the creation of images.
