Inclusive Education
What Works for Disabled Children?
Developing Evidence-based Policy in the South

A one-day international workshop for practitioners and decision-makers
Thursday 6th September 2007
ORT House Conference Centre, London

9am-5.30pm
followed by a Networking Reception

WHY are we organising this event?

Policy frameworks call on governments to ensure the provision of education for all, but in practice, how can all children be included in countries where resources are already stretched?

  • Millennium Development Goals aim to achieve Universal Primary Education by 2015.
  • UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Article 24 states that: "States Parties shall ensure an inclusive education system at all levels".

Universal primary education will not be achieved unless appropriate and creative ways are found to include disabled children in education.

WHAT is it about?

This one-day international workshop will showcase practical examples of good practice for including children with disabilities in education. Facilitators from the South will present innovative and successful projects. Participative workshop topics will include:

  • Practical Collaboration Across Disciplines
    (social, health and education workers)
  • Disability and Inclusive Policy
  • Teacher Training
  • Specialist Schools As Resources
  • Debates Around Transition Classes as an Approach to Inclusive Education
  • Art Towards Inclusion
  • Engaging With Ministries of Education
  • Accessibility in Schools

Disabled people are included amongst the keynote speakers.

Following the event, models and examples will be documented to share learning among participants.
