International Advocacy
Handicap International promotes aid to landmine accident victims at an international level.
Firstly, Handicap International takes part in the Landmine Monitor.
Handicap International is also contributing to the work of the follow up committees to the Landmines Treaty alongside with the International Campaign to Ban Landmines workgroup on aid to victims. Landmines Treaty's contribution is to provide the representatives of the Treaty States with elements for technical, methodological and political reflection in order to strengthen and enhance the aid given to victims and their families. |

Support to victims
In heavily-mined countries, Handicap International is working to develop the delivery of care in terms of rehabilitation and support in the social inclusion of individuals. This work essentially focuses on:
- The training of local technicians and physiotherapists to undertake the physical rehabilitation and fitting of orthopaedic appliances
- The psychological and social support disabled people require
Handicap International also carries out actions aimed at adapting the physical and social environment. |

We believe that the resources to be implemented within the framework of providing victim assistance should be integrated into all public health programmes (vaccinations, hygiene, fighting against parasitical diseases, AIDS) and into social development actions (combating poverty and exclusion and supporting local social and economic development). Resources should contribute to the reconstruction and reorganisation of public health systems too often disrupted by years of conflict. |
