Mine Risk Education

Mine Risk Education programmes consist of education activities for the prevention of accidents caused by landmines and other explosive devices. They are mainly aimed at populations living in or needing to cross mine-torn regions.

The general objective is to enable at-risk populations to manage risks on a daily and long-term basis, and to help reduce the number of landmine victims.

Activities:

On the ground, our teams work on:

Collecting data on landmines and unexploded ordnance accidents and victims in order to define at-risk populations and devise appropriate prevention messages.

Educating and mobilising local populations by various means of information and training campaigns. These in turn rely on the use of tools and on the active involvement of local networks (e.g.: traditional and religious authorities, local and national administrations).

Educating and mobilising children via the school system or other educational networks by developing teaching materials, training courses and specific activities.

Throughout the year, we have been part of a working group at an international level, involving the United Nations, other NGOs and the International Committee of the Red Cross, laying down international standards for Mine Risk Education.
