An orthopaedic technician in Sierra Leone

© C. Acworth - Handicap International

Our key activities include:

  • the training of orthopaedic technicians and rehabilitation centres management (administration, HR, coordination)
  • the development of rehabilitation services: orthopaedic workshops providing artificial limb fitting and other support devices like orthosis, combined with physical rehabilitation care (e.g. physiotherapy)
  • the support for the development of rehabilitation services into national health and social systems through the establishment of professionals’ networks

For this reason, Handicap International became involved in:

  • Gaining recognition for the training and status of new professionals
  • The issues regarding management of services including cost-recovery schemes
  • The choice of appropriate technologies adapted to each context
  • Establishing temporary prosthesis production facilities in emergency situations alongside ongoing thoughts about technology and know-how transfer and support to local facilities.
