In the Ivory Coast, Handicap International's activities are:

  • Support to orthopaedic and rehabilitation centres
  • Support to associative development and to disabled people
  • Evaluation of the situation of disabled people in the Ivory Coast
  • Fight against Buruli ulcer
  • Training modules on landmines

CONTEXT
Once hailed as a model of stability, Ivory Coast has slipped into the kind of internal strife that has plagued many African countries. An armed rebellion in 2002 split the nation in two, and the main players in the conflict have so far failed to find a political solution, or to implement the terms of a peace accord.

In the UN Human Development Index, the Ivory Coast ranked 163 out of 177 countries.

BACKGROUND
In 1992, Handicap International started his activities in the Ivory Coast with the setting up of a rehabilitation and appliance centre in Gagnoa.

ACTIVITIES

1) Support to orthopaedic and rehabilitation centres
Technical support and orthopedic assistance are meticulously brought to the CESPPH in Danané (West of the country)().

A regular follow-up of the activities of the physiotherapy service of the hospital in Treichville (Abidjan) allows us to evaluate the effect of the training, to collect statistics of attendance, follow the good use and maintenance of equipment and to help set up a reception methodology for the patient in accordance with the new Management.

Since 2001, Handicap International has been actively working with the Yopougon Hospital in Abidjan. The hospital provides orthopaedic equipment and the important demand shows the need to be able to meet the patients' expectations. The making of technical aids using local materials is made in partnership with the Centre des Métiers and the disabled people's organisation Lamine Fadiga of Bouaké. Eight technicians have been trained so far.

The orthopaedic centre within the Bouaké Hospital in the North of the country has now being built.  Fourteen local staff are also being trained.

2) Support to associative development
Handicap International carries on supporting the activities of the Federation of Associations for the Social Promotion of Disabled People of Ivory Coast (FAHCI).

3) Buruli ulcer
The plan of fight against endemic, Ulcer of Buruli, in the centre of the country in collaboration with the national programme and many partners has come to an end. The financing research phase is ongoing.

4) Training
We work with a governmental partner specialised in professional training (AGEFOP) to gain the recognition of the training given in physiotherapy and orthopaedics to national trainees by Handicap International.
