Handicap International UK's staff support programmes across the organisation.
• Raising funds for Handicap International’s activities
Handicap International UK raises money from the general public, schools, groups, corporates, trusts and institutional funders to support Handicap International’s work worldwide. Handicap International UK is a member of the Institute of Fundraising and the Fundraising Standards Board, and so aims to adhere to best practice in fundraising and contributes to the general development of the third sector. We are also a member of the Remember a Charity consortium which aims to increase the awareness and uptake of giving through legacies in the UK.
• Field programmes
During 2010, Handicap International UK supported projects in 12 countries, with major contributions to Burkina Faso, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Haiti.
The full list of countries supported in 2010 is: Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Lebanon, Nepal, Pakistan, The Philippines, Rwanda and Sierra Leone.
• Inclusive Education
Handicap International's Inclusive Education projects overseas are supported by Technical Advisors, one of whom is based in the UK. Discover more about our approach to inclusive education for children with disabilities in developing countries.
• Knowledge Management
We manage Source, an international information support centre, and promote its use by professionals and students around the world. We work in collaboration with other organisations to develop relevant and easily usable keylists to promote greater knowledge and good practice.
• Making it Work
In collaboration with Handicap International US and other partners, we also support Making it Work, a global multi-stakeholder initiative to promote effective implementation of the UN Convention for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
• Awareness-raising and development education
We work with community groups and schools across the UK to raise awareness about the devastating effects of landmines and cluster munitions on communities. We also work in education networks to promote greater understanding of issues surrounding disability and development, including the importance of including all learners in education, irrespective of their ability.
